"Through this fist style one gains long life and happiness." - Kajukenbo

Hello Everyone,
We hope your week is going well and do not give up on those new years resolutions you can do it!
Anyhow,
Today's topic is KAJUKENBO. Started in the streets of Oahu, HI around 1947.

Broken down:
  • KA - Karate/Tang Soo do, By Peter Young Yil Choo
  • JU - Judo and Jui Jitsu, By Frank Ordonez and Joe Holk
  • KEN - Kenpo, By Adriano Emperado
  • Bo - Chinese Boxing, By Clarence Chang
As you can see KAJUKENBO is a mixed martial art founded by five different martial artists who trained together to create a practical and useful art form. They called themselves "The Black Belt Society" with Sijo Adriano D. Emperado as the head of Kajukenbo (Photo above). Here is a link to the Kajukenbo home  page: KAJUKENBO HISTORY. Kajukenbo is one of the few martial arts that is constantly evolving taking in new methods and ideas.  (Please feel free to comment or add more info about the history of Kajukenbo.)

Kajukenbo is an aggressive and very effective martial art form. Some people call it the art of dirty fighting even there blocks are known to be forceful strikes. Kajukenbo incorporates and is not limited to defense against (a): Gun, knife, club, different types of grabs and punches, multiple attackers, chokes, and much more. This form will not only teach you the quickest way to take down your opponent/attacker but will also teach you self respect, self discipline, respect for others, and how to balance your spirit, mind, and body. Here is one of the theories: "R.A.D.  Recognize the situation you are in. Avoid confrontation if possible. Defend yourself if you have to."

If you are looking for a great all around martial art form we recommend trying Kajukenbo. Here is a direct link to schools all around the world including Hawaii: Kajukenbo Schools. Many of the schools will give you a free intro lesson just give the school a call. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
KC Martial Arts Supplies carries all the Kajukenbo gear! Online and in our store location.

Judo - " The Gentle Path"

Hello Everyone,

How is your week going so far? The weekend is almost here!

Today's topic is...Judo! JU (gentle) Do (way or path) JUDO = "The gentle way." Judging by the photo above it does not look very gentle to me. After doing some research we found that Judo and Juijitsu were on in the same. Judo became its own form roughly around the late 1800's practiced and studied by this man named Dr. Jigoro Kano (the founder of Judo). Dr. Jigoro Kano took the striking from juijitsu to make Judo the Olympic sport it is today. For more on the history of Judo please click on this link: History of Judo.

Judo is made up of various sweeps, throws, pins, and several locks. Taking Judo will increase your burst power and ability to read your opponents body movements. One of our workers that does Kajukenbo shared with us his experience sparring against a Judo practitioner: "I have never been caught of guard so many times with the amount of sweeps he landed. It was like he knew were I was going to step next." If you are interested in taking Judo classes check your local schools and recreational centers chances are they have Judo classes. If not please visit: Onzuka.com. We highly recommend looking up Sensai  Ray Imada. Great practitioner and an even better person. If you have any questions please let us know or if you have any insights about Judo please feel free to contact us or leave a comment. Thank you for stopping in!

New Years Resolution: Work out!

Hello Everyone,

Happy New Year!

The question of the day is: Do you have new year resolutions and is one of them to work out?

Let me tell you right now that being fit and working out does not require you to hit the gym! The hardest part about getting it fit is the fist step: Getting Started. We asked one of our workers how he got started and here is what he said:
  1. Listen to your favorite song (Preferably a faster song)
  2. Find what motivates you
  3. Set a fitness goal
  4. Drill it through your head that you want to get fit
Now put it in a sentence: "With my favorite song playing, girl friend by my side (his motivation), and fitness goals in place; I am ready to get fit!" Immediately after that is said start doing some push ups, sit ups, or start running. Trust me you will feel better.

Remember how we said getting fit does not require you to go to the gym? You can start in your office, at home, or in the gym. If you acknowledge that you want to get fit you will already be more conscience about what you eat, how you carry yourself, and how you live. There are many ways in getting fit and everyone is different. Here are a few ideas to consider: find a training buddy, try martial arts, yoga, zumba, try playing some of the sports you used to play as you were a kid, start biking, swimming, running, walking daily, stretching, ect...Please help us if you have anymore suggestions.

One Hit Kill: Shotokan Karate

Hello Everyone,

We hope you all had a Merry Christmas! Did you get what you wished for? The New Year is right around the corner!

Anyways, the topic of the day is: Karate. Karate is said to have originated over 1000 years ago  in China as a martial art form practiced by monks. Due to large amounts of trading between China and Okinawa the martial art form soon became an arts studied by Japan.
"Master Gichin Funakoshi formally introduced a style of Okinawan fighting arts, known as Okinawa-Te (later known as Karate) to mainland Japan in 1917 where the art of Karate soon became popular. Master Hidetaka Nishiyama in his book KARATE THE ART OF EMPTY HAND FIGHTING claims, "At the same time, the ancient native Japanese hand-to-hand fighting techniques jujitsu and kendo (sword fighting) were being widely practiced, and modern sports imported from the West were rapidly becoming popular. Karate soon took over many elements of both of these, and the basis was laid for the modern Japanese-style karate".- Karate History. If you have any questions or would like to help us out please feel free to comment.

If you are looking for a traditional, disciplined, and powerful martial art we recommend taking Shotokan Karate. Here is a link that will give you a list of Karate Schools in Hawaii: Onzuka.com

Master Ginchin Funakoshi is in the photo above. "Karate is not only the acquisition of certain defensive skills, but also the mastering of the art of being a good and honest member of society." - Ginchi Funakoshi.

Thank you for stopping in! Happy Holidays!

Gas mask training!? Does it work...

Hello Everyone!

Has anyone encountered a runner with a gas mask on? We have and it was pretty weird. So we did some research on "gas mask" training. Training with a gas mask is equal to training in high altitudes; better breathing with less air. Here is a link to a further and more in depth explanation and a video on how they train: Gas Mask Training.

"I am to old for martial arts."

Hello Everyone,

It is officially Christmas month! Happy Holidays!

Here is the good news: "It is never to late to join martial arts!" There is a martial art for every age. Have you ever asked yourself how old grand masters are? Old but they can still move. A more popular martial arts amongst the "elderly" age is Tai Chi. Tai chi is very peaceful, relaxing, and gentle. It is even said that Tai Chi helps prevent cancer and other diseases. Here is a video to help you get started and if these people can do it so can you!

Jui Jitsu the unarmed martial art form.

Hello Everyone,

Today's topic is Jui-Jitsu the unarmed martial art form. The video above is only a few of the many effective techniques used to take down an opponent. Here in Hawaii there are many forms of Jui-Jitsu: Brazilian, American, traditional, Japanese, and much more. We believe that judo and jui-jitsu used to be one in the same but we can not back that answer up. Does anyone know the history of the Jui-jitsu form? We have tried to do some research and ask questions but all the answers we get are different. If you live in Hawaii we do recommend checking out Mad Tiger Academy  with Eric Goo. If you have any questions about any martial art form please do not hesitate to ask us! Thank you for stopping by.

Honestly, there is no wrong or right way to wrap your hands: It all depends on how and what you are training for. The point we are getting at is to know your goals and wrap the way that fits your training style. Here is a link to help get you started: Hand wraps 101. Have a great day!
